The Surprising Gift of Leadership

Have you ever entered a coaching or teaching role expecting to give, only to discover you received just as much in return?

That was my experience recently. I had the privilege of facilitating two powerful gatherings: a board retreat focused on developing vision and training around Working Genius and Grace Space, followed by a three-day executive retreat where we reviewed strategic plans, clarified vision, and explored something often overlooked in the process of change— energy.

Yes, it was a lot back-to-back. But I loved it. Why? Because of the people.

What struck me most was not just their dedication to their organizations but the way they showed up for each other. I watched a board practice humility and servant leadership in action. Without ego, they leaned in, listened well, and prioritized the collective good above individual agendas. Their productivity didn’t come from pushing harder; it came from pulling together.

And the executives I worked with? They modeled what standout leadership looks like: clarity, confidence, and courage. But even more, they demonstrated genuine care for one another. I watched them challenge and encourage each other, mentor and motivate their teams, and cheer each other on toward greatness. Their respect wasn’t demanded; it was earned through authenticity and compassion.

What I Learned

  • True strength is found in humility.
  • Success grows when leaders prioritize the well-being of their people.
  • Teams thrive when challenge is paired with compassion and encouragement.

A Call to Action

If you’re in a leadership role—or even simply influencing those around you—let this be your reminder: great leadership is not about titles or power. It’s about how well you serve, how deeply you care, and how courageously you call others to their best.

This week, choose one way to embody servant leadership. Maybe it’s listening more than speaking in a meeting, cheering on a colleague who needs encouragement, or stepping aside so someone else can shine. Small acts of humility and care create ripple effects that transform teams, organizations, and ultimately—cultures.

Lead with humility. Lead with courage. Lead with compassion. That’s where greatness grows.

Cheering you on!
