What Limits Us—and What Grows Us—as Leaders

Leadership isn’t about a title; it’s about how we show up for the people around us. Yet even the best leaders bump up against beliefs or patterns that quietly hold us back.

Maybe it’s the fear of conflict that keeps us from having necessary conversations, or the pressure to look like we have it all together that stops us from being real. These limitations don’t mean we’re failing—they mean we’re human.

The good news is that every barrier also invites us into growth. When we notice what’s holding us back, we create space for something new to take root.

Growth often comes through the very challenges we resist.

The tough conversation, when approached with empathy and honesty, deepens trust. The willingness to admit we don’t have all the answers builds connection instead of distance.

And the moment we risk vulnerability, we give our team permission to do the same.

Leadership isn’t about being flawless—it’s about being authentic, learning as we go, and showing others what it looks like to grow in real time.

So, here are 3 Takeaways for Leaders that will help you create the culture you want for taking new risks and leading with empathy:

  1. Name your limitations—what you avoid or fear often points to where you can grow.
  2. Embrace discomfort as a leader—growth rarely comes from easy places.
  3. Lead with authenticity—when you show up real, others feel free to do the same.

Because when we choose to name our limitations, lean into discomfort, and lead with authenticity, the benefits ripple outward. Personally, we gain clarity, confidence, and courage that brings a new sense of freedom—we no longer waste energy hiding or pretending.

For our teams, it builds a culture of trust, courage, and resilience where people feel safe to grow, innovate, and step into their own leadership. In the end, the very things that stretch us as leaders become the gifts that strengthen the people we serve.

If you’re ready to dig deeper into this journey, my book, Grace Space, offers practical tools and stories to help you create space for growth—for yourself and for the people you lead.
