Who are You Choosing to Become?

One of the most powerful questions we can ask ourselves is not about what we want to accomplish, but who we are choosing to become. Every decision is actively shaping us. Every boundary we set, every conversation we have, every time we choose courage instead of avoidance, and every time we follow through on what we said mattered—it all shapes our identity.

We are always becoming someone; the question is whether we are becoming that person intentionally.

This concept is at the very heart of the coaching work I do. We talk extensively about goals, leadership, strategy, and results, but underneath all of that is a deeper question: who do you want to become as you live and lead?. The highly successful people I work with live with a constant awareness that this choice is always in front of them, made in both big and small ways. They ask themselves if they are responding to frustration well, keeping their commitments, speaking honestly, and choosing what is aligned over what is comfortable. These moments may seem small, but they are not insignificant.

Successful people do not leave their development completely to chance; they live with intention.

Sometimes we become so focused on the outcome that we forget to pay attention to the person pursuing it. But the way you reach the goal matters. The way you treat people, care for yourself, respond under pressure, and recover from mistakes—all of it matters. Rather than only asking what you want to do next, try asking who you want to be next, and then make choices that support that person again and again.

Achievement can change your circumstances, but becoming changes you.

The Weekly Shift

Choose Your Three Words

Take a few minutes this week to ask yourself who you are choosing to become, and select three words that describe that person.

(If you need a little inspiration, go to 🔗 The Intentional Leader's Word Bank to help you identify the exact energy and identity you want to lean into this season.)

Write those words somewhere you will see them and use them as a filter for your behavior. Before an important conversation, or when pressure rises, ask yourself how the person you are becoming would show up in that moment. You will not get it right every time, but the point is to live with enough awareness that you keep choosing your way back.

You are always becoming. Choose on purpose.
