The Courage to Keep Showing Up

Leadership often sounds inspiring in theory, but in practice, it asks something challenging of us: the courage to keep showing up.

Not just when things are going well, but when growth feels uncomfortable, when we don’t have every answer, and when the next step requires us to stretch beyond what feels familiar.

This is where the framework of 3C Living—Clarity, Confidence, and Courage—becomes powerful. Clarity helps us know where we are going. Confidence grows as we build beliefs around what is possible. Ultimately, courage is what drives leadership forward.

Here are five ways leaders show up well that require courage:

1. Have Honest Conversations

Great leaders are willing to speak the truth with care. They create environments grounded in truth, trust, and transparency where feedback is given not to tear someone down but to help everyone grow. Courageous leaders know that avoiding necessary conversations may feel easier in the moment, but it ultimately holds people and teams back.

2. Take Thoughtful Risks

Leadership rarely comes with complete certainty. Courageous leaders understand they may not have every answer—but they move forward with enough clarity to take the next step. They encourage calculated risks, recognizing that innovation and growth often result from learning, adjusting, and trying again.

3. Stay Committed to Personal Growth

Leadership always starts from within. The best leaders continually invest in their development—mentally, emotionally, physically, and relationally. They seek feedback from trusted people, remain open to learning, and ask themselves regularly: Am I becoming a better leader today than I was yesterday?

4. Create a Culture of Learning Instead of Shame

Courageous leaders build environments where mistakes are examined with curiosity rather than blame. They hold high standards while allowing people the grace to learn, grow, and improve. This balance of excellence and grace encourages innovation and trust across teams.

5. Invite Others Into the Journey

Leadership growth is not meant to happen in isolation. Courageous leaders invite mentors, coaches, and trusted advisors into their development. They recognize that wisdom grows in community and that outside perspectives help them see what they might otherwise miss.

At the end of the day, leadership isn’t about perfection.

It’s about what I call 3C Living & Leading – showing up with clarity, building confidence through learning, and having the courage to keep growing—even when it’s uncomfortable. Learn more about 3C Living & Leading in The Life You’re Made For.
